zfs linux checking spl source directory… Not found

We got the following error when compiling zfs on linux

checking spl source directory… Not found configure: error: *** Please make sure the spl devel package for your distribution *** is installed then try again. If that fails you can specify the *** location of the spl source with the ‘–with-spl=PATH’ option.

In order to solve this problem the spl package needs to be installed. This can be obtained from the zfs on linux website.
