A useful feature of Windows Server 2008 R2 is the ability to backup over a mapped network drive. This feature was not available in Windows Server 2008. The benefit of mapping over a network drive is that it allows you to mount a remote storage to store your backup on. This is good for having a geographically different location for your data. It also allows you to restore data from the remote mapped network drive in the recovery manager. Using the most up to date windows backup software is important, and it is especially true when making and restoring from backups.
